Massey High School has been the scene of a large number of mispunches in the past. It is built on a number of different levels and some building corners look similar. Tane, despite his supposed home school advantage had mispunched in both events here in the last two years. Despite knowing this, he would repeat the feat today.
I started off with an unexpected leap over a wall. I wasn't planning on it, I was going to use the stairs that were mapped but when I got close up it looked jumpable so jump I did. I don't think I would have liked it to be any higher. I was fairly slow over the first few controls as I got into the map and in particular the 1:2000 scale. There was another wall to descend on the way into Control 4 as I read the map incorrectly and ended up on a balcony with the choice of jumping or retreating. I jumped.
I took a fairly conservative route to Control 5 and then ran the wrong side of the vegetation into 6, seduced by a control I could see in front of me that wasn't on my course. I'd figured it out as soon as I committed to that side so I simply rounded the end of the thicket and ran straight to the correct control.
The leg from 7 to 8 involved more leaping of walls and stairs but the major wall was on the leg from 9 to 10. Quite why I decided to go down the left side of the building in front of the control I'm not sure but once committed to that course I was faced by the usual retreat or jump dilemma, this time with a 2m+ jump. I jumped. None of these route choices were doing my time any favours but at least I remembered the correct route rounding the corner to Control 12, which acted as a pivot along with 4.
The obvious straight line route from 12 to 13 was not available to us as the fields were closed hence the triangular route to Control 13. The bottom field was open though. After the ubiquitous playing field sprint there was one last loop through the school buildings with none of the controls causing any particular problems before rounding the final building and into the finish.
Unsurprisingly, Jonty had taken nearly a minute out of me but at least neither of us mispunched!
